My name is Nicholas Magnone. September 26 1969 was the first meeting of the Spanish Speaking Branch of the Las Angeles California Santa Monica Stake. It was Organized by the Stake President, Thomas Myers.
Nicholas Magnone was the first branch president. His counselors were Sotero Elias and Rodolfo Gutierrez. He served until January 1978. Other counselors were Haroldo Mendoza, Diego Lloret, Enrique Morales. There might have been others but I don’t remember their names.
Other branch presidents were Nelson Albanese, (?) Sierra, Ramon Riquelme. President Riquelme was called as bishop when the branch became a ward.
The branch met in the Santa Monica Stake center until 1978 when it moved to the La Cienega Ward and Culver City Ward building. Both wards had been disbanded due to lack of membership. The Branch organized into a ward at the same time as the Huntington Park West Stake was organized. The first Spanish speaking stake in the United States. The new La Cienega ward was integrated into the new stake. This happened June, 1984 under the direction of Howard W, Hunter, a member of the Twelve.
La Cienega ward remained in the Huntington Park West Stake until August, 2003 when it was returned to the Santa Monica Stake. This happened under the direction of Richard G. Scott, a member of the Twelve.
Other bishops were called and the ward moved out of the building when it was condemned. It eventually came to the new Mar Vista building in 1991 when the new building was completed at 3655 Centinela Ave.
Bishops that served in the new building since 1991are Sotiris Vasilopolos, Nelson Albanese, Rene Monterroso, Francisco Frausto, Nicholas Magnone and Brett Burrows and once again Sotiris Vasilopolos to date, December 2021.
